Will a New Theme or Redesign Improve Traffic?

GoogleTrafficWe know of many businesses who decided to ‘redesign’ their website as traffic was falling and online sales leads infrequent. The website is after all, an online version of a printed brochure.

we’ve seen where a local design shop or marketing expert confirms the need for a ‘refresh’ of their branding and copy, with a modern ‘mobile-responsive’ design, promising them more exposure and more business.

smiley-face-sad-bwYet a successful outcome with all this effort and expense almost never occurs. I’ve not seen a website makeover instituted by an agency, designer or marketer significantly improve organic search traffic, or online sales leads. After months of nil improvement they often resort to buying traffic using Google AdWords…

If lack of organic search traffic or online sales leads in the issue, then hiring an agency, web designer or a marketing company to revamp your website isn’t the answer. It’s an SEO, copywriting and performance issue. It’s like asking your panel beater to fix your car engine. Different skills and equipment needed.

Good design goes beyond the look – Steve Jobs

design-is-not-just-what-it-looks-like I accept that good design and design input is important for any website project. My best projects have been with the involvement of a skilled graphic designer. Expert design improves conversions and raises credibility. But it won’t help get new leads arriving via a search (Google is blind to good looks).

Usually, the opposite happens with these branding rebuilds, with search traffic often reducing for quite technical reasons that marketers, designers, even many web developers, have little knowledge of, or interest in

Are we building a pretty brochure or a sales channel?

Most business owners applaud the concept that their website should get more traffic and sales. But at the end of the day, for too many, it is still about good looks and appearances first, traffic and sales second, if at all.

Let’s establish some goals then. For example, website ‘design’ parameters to include some research to see if the proposed website content matches what people are actually searching for – This helps get more, better qualified traffic. To also determine if Google actually ‘likes’ the site technically and willing to send it leads... Some expert visitor / lead tracking and followup systems too, with weekly reports, as you’d expect from a good salesperson. Perhaps quarterly testing of the site to ensure the functionality, theme, sliders or host isn’t causing SEO or performance problems that annoy visitors and Google.

Our new Traffic/SEO package can quickly boost traffic, search rankings and leads, since most WordPress sites are quite sick, hosted on slow, shared servers, overloaded with imagery, sliders, bad plugins…
