My name is Kevin Trye, a registered engineering associate and a senior website developer. A real geek, with grey hair. Originally qualified in design/troubleshooting radio telecommunications systems, then electronics, fibre networks, high-end print industry scanners, Unix/Sun servers and 8 years working at Fuji Xerox on their colour production systems. My CV is at https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevintrye/
Website development started as a hobby, building business CMS websites part-time with Joomla in 2003. We did more on the WordPress platform from 2007 as the interest in blogging grew. With a tech, not design background, we offered particular expertise in hosting, security, eCommerce and more recently, eLearning options. Over a thousand sites now, working with business owners, marketing people, as well as graphic designers needing help with WordPress theme coding, repairs, hosting, SEO and security, all the bits not covered at web design/graphics school.
We’ve even assisted other developers since hosting, speed or security isn’t covered well at web development schools. Even traditional ‘IT’ people know very little about online security or hosting options. Weird, right? I guess it just proves specialisation is the norm… I have the luxury of having slowly worked through all these disciplines over several decades.
Our education focus: Keen on helping others learn about online and avoid the obvious pitfalls, we founded the Auckland WordPress Meetup Group in 2013, which sadly is no longer active, like many things, killed off by covid. Here, we mentored users and web designers with monthly meetings and free tutorials. What started with 8 people in a coffee shop in 2013, soon grew to hundreds in just 3 years. We then organised the 2014 Auckland Wordcamp and later arranged a visit and amazing lectures by WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg in 2015. Remnants of those glory days are found here. But it did teach me what could be done if people came together for a common cause, unselfishly.
Today we live in Northland, semi-retired and tend to keep a lower profile, no longer actively marketing our skills or even keeping my old website current. Still look after a few dozen key clients, making good use of online tools like Jitsi for privacy. Here we do regular training, even live updates on website designs or content, saving my clients time and costs.
